Federal Battery Rebate Sydney

What the Cheaper Home Batteries Program means for Sydney homeowners

If you have been thinking about adding a battery to your solar system, 2026 is a genuinely good time to do it. The federal government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program is cutting around 25 to 30 per cent off the upfront cost of a home battery installation across Australia, including right here in Sydney.

There is no income test. No application form to fill out yourself. Your installer applies the discount directly to your quote, and you pay less on the day. Here is everything you need to know.

How much is the federal battery rebate worth in Sydney?

From 1 May 2026, the federal battery rebate is worth approximately $252 per usable kilowatt hour for most standard home batteries. The table below shows what that looks like across the most common battery sizes installed in Sydney homes.

Battery System Usable Capacity Est. Federal Rebate NSW PDRS Incentive Total Savings
Entry level 10 kWh ~$2,520 Up to $1,500 ~$4,020
Most popular 13.5 kWh (e.g. Tesla Powerwall 3) ~$3,402 Up to $1,500 ~$4,902
Best rebate value 14 kWh ~$3,528 Up to $1,500 ~$5,028
Medium system 20 kWh ~$4,234 Up to $1,500 ~$5,734

Federal rebate figures are estimates based on the post-May 2026 STC rate of ~$252/kWh for the first 14 kWh. Capacity above 14 kWh is rebated at a lower tiered rate. NSW PDRS incentive requires VPP connection. Figures are indicative only and will vary based on your installer and STC spot price at time of installation.

How does the rebate work?

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides an upfront discount on the purchase and installation of home batteries through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), the same framework that has delivered the national solar panel rebate for years. SolarQuotes

Homeowners do not need to do anything to claim the rebate. Installers apply for it and deduct the value from the total system price. You simply receive a lower invoice on the day. SolarQuotes

The rebate is calculated using Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). The number of STCs your battery earns depends on its usable capacity and the current STC factor. Sydney Solar and Electrical handles all of this on your behalf. You will see the rebate clearly itemised on your quote before you commit to anything.

Australian households, businesses and community organisations can receive a discount of around 30 per cent on the upfront cost of installing a range of small-scale battery systems. To qualify, your installation needs to meet a few straightforward requirements:

  • Your battery must have a usable capacity of between 5 kWh and 100 kWh

  • The battery must be connected to an existing or new solar PV system

  • There is no income or means test — all Australian homeowners with eligible properties can apply

  • One rebate per electricity meter (NMI) — owners of multiple properties may claim separately at each

  • The battery must be VPP capable (joining a VPP is optional — the hardware just needs to support it)

  • The battery must be on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list

  • Installation must be carried out by an SAA-accredited installer

  • The installation must comply with all state and territory electrical safety regulations

How is the rebate calculated in 2026?

The rebate has moved from a flat per-kWh discount to a tiered rate system based on battery size. The STC Factor rate now depends on the battery capacity installed. Below is table outlining the structurer tiered system.

Battery Capacity (usable) Rebate Factor Applied Typical Household
0 to 14 kWh 100% of STC factor Average family home
14 to 28 kWh 60% of STC factor Larger homes or small business
28 to 50 kWh Reduced STC factor Commercial or large property
Above 50 kWh No rebate applies Large commercial only
